It's no wonder why BATF had to come down on Ruger for their sloppy serial number management. For Single-Sixes, it started out as "20" then the prefix advanced in years to come. What happened to the other 4719 serial numbers is anyone's guess? For guns made after Jan 1 of '69, all Ruger serial numbers had a prefix that was unique to a specific model. D500000 to D505140, however only S/N 500000 to 500421 had been issued authentic serial numbers (without the "D"). in 1968, there were over 5 thousand duplicate serial numbers issued for Single-Six Convertibles. Some were caught before they were shipped, some weren't. Further, Ruger made many mistakes and duplicated a lot of serial numbers. In years prior to 1969, the same exact serial number could be found on a Ruger rifle, pistol, or revolver. After the Gun Control Act of 1968 (effective Jan 1, 1969) BATF required Ruger to clean up their act and use a different serial number scheme. There are also blocks of serial numbers that were never used. There are instances where there are several years between the build date and ship date. When you get a letter from Ruger, it indicates the month and year the gun was shipped. Wave, The OPs S/N is a classic example of what you said.
